FIRST RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION) TO BE CELEBRATED NEXT SUNDAY

The Sacrament of First Confession will be celebrated by the 20 children from our parishes who are going to make their First Holy Communion in the Spring.  We will celebrate on Saturday, March 1 at 11:00 am in Holy Name Church.  I would ask all parents to go over the way they are to go to confession as well as practice the Act of Contrition.

ASH WEDNESDAY/LENT - ONLY 9 DAYS AWAY

If Ash Wednesday/Lent are so close, can Spring be that far behind!!  March 5 is Ash Wednesday.  There will be 3 opportunities for everyone to receive ashes on that day.  There will be a 7:00 am, Liturgical Service in Holy Name Church (this 20 minute service will give those going to work the chance to start off this season in a spiritual way); there will be a 12:00 noon Mass in Holy Name Church, ashes will be distributed during Mass;  there will be another Liturgical Service at 6:00 pm in Holy Name Church.

TAKING A BREAK

After 30 years of having Lenten Fish Fries, the Pastor and the committee, decided to “take a break” this year and not have an Ash Wednesday/Lent Fish Fries especially since the weather has not been cooperating.  We are in discussion about a mid-Lent dinner.  Stay tuned!!

SIX LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence.  The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States.  2. Abstinence means refraining from meat.  This regulation is for those 14 years of age and older.  Fasting means limiting oneself to 1 full meal and 2 lighter meals.  This applies to those between the ages of 18 – 59.  3. Those with a medical condition which fasting may be harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of charity or penance. 4. Parents are to see to it that minors not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic  sense of penance and to do acts of penance suitable  to their age.  5.  Everyone is encouraged to do acts of charity and penance beyond what is prescribed by law. 6.  Dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present.  Social events, banquets, wedding rehearsals or receptions, funeral  wakes are not considered sufficient reason to request dispensation.

WOMEN'S SPIRITUAL FOCUS GROUP NEWS

Due to increased family obligations, Rowena Lynch will no longer be able to facilitate the Women’s Spiritual Focus Group.  However, she did recommend that Rosie Dubyak would be a suitable replacement.  Rosie has prayerfully agreed to take over this responsibility for the parishes.  Any women wishing to join should just come to the next meeting.

HOMEMADE HOAGIE SALE

We will be having our monthly “Homemade Hoagie Sale” next weekend of March 1 & 2.  We are grateful for the support that you have given to this project.  If anyone would like to place an order, you may do so by calling the rectory or emailing us at office@christthelightoftheworld.org.   We are having more and more businesses placing orders, picking them up on Saturday or Sunday and delivering them on Monday.  They are $5.00 each and a great buy for the price.
  • Volunteers:  This project couldn’t happen without the great group of 25 – 30 regular volunteers.  It is a positive, social, fun time for everyone.  Anyone is invited to volunteer.  The time commitment is about 3 hours on Saturday beginning at 8 am.  For those who work during the week, it gives them a chance to help the parish.  Just show up and you will be given a job.  The more help we have the quicker we are finished.

ALTAR SERVERS BEING RECRUITED

We are in the process of recruiting boys and girls to participate in this “special ministry” of our parish.   I hope that parents would encourage their children to participate.  This ministry is open to any boy or girl, 5th grade and older.  You are only asked to serve usually once a month.  There will be 2 training sessions and you will start being scheduled after Easter. If interested, call Fr. Dennis.

The loss of a spouse through separation, divorce or death is a most traumatic experience.  Many people who have suffered this loss feel left out by their church, uneasy around married friends, unsure of themselves, and uncertain about the future.  The Beginning Experience weekend is intended to help those who would like to pass through grief and begin to move forward with their lives. Come to a safe place. Travel from heartache to hope.  The next weekend will be held March 21 – 23 at Gilmary Center in Moon Twp.
