THANKSGIVING DAY MASS

What better way to give thanks to God for all the blessings He has given to us than join together as the Catholic community of the Churches of Duquesne on Thursday at the 10:00 am Mass in Holy Name Church.  Many have often said this is their favorite Mass of the year.  We celebrate and pray together.  We are awed at the “mountain” of brown bags. We are excited to hear the jingle of coins for the needy.  We are reminded how blest we are.  We take apples for our Thanksgiving table. We process out carrying the gifts of Love that will bring love to others.  BE THERE THURSDAY!

THANKSGIVING BROWN BAG REACHOUT

We try to reach out to the places with the greatest need, especially those whom society often ignores and tosses aside as unlovable.  This year, we have 7 places to help.  Resource Mothers;  Jubilee Soup Kitchen; Angels Place;   Intersection;  Michaels Place; Healthy Start House; Gateway Braddock. If you haven’t done so already bring your bags with you on Thursday.  These groups will be picking them up after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

THANKSGIVING REACHOUT

You can make a monetary donation to help a needy family of our parish for Thanksgiving.  Drop the donation in the collection or mail to the rectory.  Mark the envelope, “Reachout.”  Another easy way to participate is by donating some “Food Store Gift Cards.”  Hungry people are a major issue for us.

CANS OF COINS

Start saving your coins/change for our traditional “coin offering” at our Thanksgiving Liturgy which helps needy families.  This is another great way to teach your children about charitable giving.

SUNDAY BREAKFAST BUFFET

The Caring Ministry is hosting a “Sunday after Thanksgiving Breakfast Buffet” on Sunday, November 25 from 9am – 1:30 pm in the Holy Name Hall.  Menu: includes scrambles eggs, bacon, sausage, chipped beef with biscuits, home fries, French toast, fresh fruit, rolls, juice, coffee, tea.  Donation: Adults - $7.00, Children (12 & under – first child - $4.00 other family children eat free.)  All proceeds benefit the Caring Ministry.

  • Family Special: families with multiple children, only pay for (1) first child, other family children eat free.
  • Volunteer:  We need volunteers to work that morning.  It is a great opportunity for those who work weekdays to help the parish on the weekend. If you can help call Debbie Lesko (412-297-1732) or Terry Fuller (412-466-4223 or email her at (terry@christthelightoftheworld.org.)
  • Make a Donation: If anyone would like to make a monetary donation to defray the costs, mail it to the rectory, or drop in the collection.

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY RAFFLE

Once again, we will be having a “Stocking Stuffer Holiday Raffle” in both parishes.  This week the invitations and tickets will be mailed out to you.  Each ticket is $10.00 with 30 chances to win.  The raffle will be based on the 3 digit PA. daily lottery number.  It will begin on December 25, 2012 and continue until January 25, 2013.  There will be a $100.00 dollar winner each day.  SPECIAL PRIZE: Christmas Day and New Years Day - $200.00 winners.

After sending out the tickets, we still have about 200 tickets for each parish to sell.   So, if you are able to buy a few extras, we would encourage you to do so, so that this fundraiser can be most beneficial to the parishes as possible.  Just send your donation in the mail and we will send you as many tickets as you want or stop by the rectory.  Returns can be made via the collection basket or by mail.

CEMETERY NEWS - GRAVES FOR SALE

It has been so wonderful to receive compliments on how well our 3 parish cemeteries are maintained and manicured. The accolades should go to the workers who are dedicated and view this work as a ministry to our deceased loved ones. However, the cost to operate the cemeteries has skyrocketed (i.e. at the St. Joseph cemetery, we had to take funds from the parish to pay the cemetery staff during the summer, since there was no income because of a significant decrease in burials. This is not a good business practice.  Also, we are still the most reasonable in pricing of all the area cemeteries.

Graves For Sale: Beginning in January, there will be a price increase in all areas related to the cemeteries (Holy Name, St. Hedwig, St. Joseph.)  In order for you to avoid the increase cost of graves, we are making you a special offer.  From November 11 thru December 11, you may purchase graves at the present cost ($600.00, single grave and $1,050.00, double – parishioner or non-parishioner.) After December 31, the cost of a single grave will be $800.00 and a double will be $1,600.00.  Call the rectory, we will take your name and phone.  One of the cemetery staff will set an appointment to meet with you, show you the graves available and write a bill of sale.  Due to this particular situation, there are no payment plans available through the cemetery or parish.

CHRISTMAS SEALS

The Knights of Columbus will be distributing Christmas seals after all the Masses next weekend, Nov. 24 & 25.  The donations go to fund St. Anthony School for Exceptional Children and Maguire Home for mentally and physically challenged children and adults.

OUTSIDE PARISH NEWS

Homeville VFD is collecting new toys for kids of all ages or donations for toys for tots from now until December 15, 2012.  We will be able to pick them up or you can drop them off at the firehall. Call (412-461-9033) or Kevin Ruhl (412-969-3636.)
