SEASONAL SCHEDULE RETURNS

The seasonal summer weekend Mass schedule will begin in a few weeks June 4 & 5.  This will be our third year for this seasonal schedule.  The schedule will be as follows:  Saturday, 5:00 pm -  Holy Name Church; 8:30 am - St. Hedwig Church:  10:00 am – Holy Name Church. This schedule will be in effect until September 11.  Make sure you pay attention.

MEMORIAL DAY MASS AT THE CEMETERY

This year the Memorial Day Mass will be held on Monday, May 30 at the Holy Name Cemetery.  The Mass will begin at 10:00 am.   If it is raining (the chances of that are good this year), the Mass will be held in Holy Name Church at 10:30 am.  Please bring a lawn chair to sit upon.

ASCENSION THURSDAY THIS WEEK

This week, Thursday, June 2 is the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. It is a holyday.  The Mass schedule for this feast is listed above.

PARISH SHARE PROGRAM - CREATIVE GIVING

Over the past several months several people have come forward with suggestions on how to meet our yearly “Parish Share Assessment.”  One viable suggestion was to place in our envelope packets one entitled, “Extra Parish Share donation.”  Those suggesting and the parish finance council felt that instead of always giving to the second collections outside the parish, that some people might want to keep their contributions here for the benefit of the parish. The finance council concurred with the suggestion.  Therefore, for anyone who wishes to participate in this way, the envelope will appear in the next month’s mailing.  This contribution will help meet our goal and lower our assessment next year.

SUMMER FLEA MARKET NEWS

In a few short weeks, preparations for our “Indoor/Outdoor Summer Flea Market” will be underway.  It will be held Friday, Saturday & Monday, July 8, 9 & 11.    We will begin accepting your donations on Tuesday, June 7.   The [HN] hall will be open from 9 – 12 noon each weekday and from 9 am – 11 am, Saturdays and Sundays.  It is time to start gathering up your households goods to be sold.   We accept anything except tires, plants, clothes and computer equipment.

ANOTHER STEP TOWARDS 1 PARISH, 3 CHURCHES, 1 FAITH COMMUNITY

For those of you who attend Mass regularly, you are going to see another “new look” to our weekend liturgies.  In our continual journey in becoming one parish, we will now have the liturgical ministers serving at all of our churches.  This step is another very visible and viable reality that we are all going to face sooner rather than later. All Liturgical Ministers, please pick up your summer schedules in the sacristy after Mass.

JOINT PARISH GOLF OUTING NEWS

  • RAFFLE:   All Cash Raffle:  This year, we are adding a “Bonus Prize” to the raffle.  Each family has been mailed (4) tickets, which you are being asked to sell or purchase.  Each ticket has two possible winning numbers on the PA  Lottery, June 20, 2011, four digit number.  The winning number gets $1,000.00 cash, the winning number above and below gets $250.00 each.  The Bonus Prize is that if any of those (3) winning numbers hit again on July 4, 2011, you get a prize of $10,000.00. If anyone needs extra tickets to buy or sell, just send us the money and we will send you the tickets.  This will help insure that we get the most benefit for our parishes.

  • GOLF OUTING – JUNE 20, 2011: We hope that everyone will participate in some way to make our “Ed Capristo Memorial Joint Parish Golf Outing and Raffle” a huge success.   There are flyers around all the churches detailing the many ways you can participate.  This is a very beneficial fundraiser for both of our parishes and everyone’s participation is necessary and vital as we strive to keep our parishes alive and going.

  • ALL VOLUNTEERS:  There will be a meeting for all those who are  volunteering at this year’s Golf Outing.  The meeting will be held in the [HN] Hall on Monday, June 6 at 6:30 pm.  The meeting should be less than one hour.  We want to make sure all the areas that require volunteers are covered.  If anyone wants to volunteer, just come to the meeting. If you are unable to attend, but still want to volunteer, call the rectory and leave your name.

FREE STROKE SCREENING

Jefferson Regional Medical Center is hosting a “Free Stroke Risk Screening” in the Holy Name Hall of Christ the Light of the World Parish on Saturday, June 4 from 9 am – 1 pm.  Ages 18 and over welcome.  No insurance required.  The screening includes:  Stroke risk survey, total cholesterol and HDL, Blood sugar level, Blood pressure check, Carbon Monoxide testing for smokers, Body fat analysis. Registration is preferred.  Screening takes approximately 30 – 45 minutes.  For information or registration, call 412-469-7100.

PROTECTING GOD'S CHILDREN UPDATES

We would like to remind everyone that all ministers and volunteers should be filling out their paperwork for clearances.  If you haven’t done them yet, you can pick up the paperwork at either church rectory.  The next 2 hour workshop for those who haven’t attended, will be here on Sunday, August 28. This will give everyone the chance to get everything done over the summer months.

NEWS FROM OUR ADOPTED TROOPS

Dear Jack:  Thanks for the box.  Snacks from home are always good.  Army food gets old quick.  I’m originally from Chicago.  My mother was born in Pittsburgh.  So, I have a heart for the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates unless they are  playing a Chicago team.  I am 33 years old, have been married for 10 years and have 2 children, Ivan (6) and Alec (2).  I have been stationed in Kansas and Germany.  This is my 3rd deployment, I have been to Iraq two times and this is my first time in Afghanistan.  My job in the army is tank commander.  There are too many mountains where I am now so we did not bring our tanks.  Since I do not have a tank right now, I have a very important job.  I work nights loading and unloading helicopters and cargo planes that then fly up into the mountains to drop off food, water and mail to small villages.  In these small villages, there are other army soldiers helping the local people fight the bad guys.  Thanks again for the snacks.  PS – the brownies were still soft. Ben Stehman
