MEN'S SPIRITUAL FOCUS GROUP

We would like to remind any man of our parish 18 years old and over of the invitation to become part of this spiritually based focus group for men. Those who have been a part of this experience over the past 3 months have come away enriched and have been given a whole new perspective on their life, their relationship with Christ and their loved ones.

So many men seem to be looking for an enriched life and something meaningful to fill up what sometimes may be lacking. This group has given men the “voice” to share what is needed and important in their life.  We meet the second Thursday of every month.  This month, we will meet in the Holy Name Hall on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 6:30 pm.

EXTRAORDINARY REACHOUT DURING ORDINARY TIME

Recently, Debbie Walters of our parish music ministry shared with me that her son, Jeff is an Army staff sergeant, in C Company, 116th Infantry.  He is the squadron trainer, and is responsible for 150 soldiers under his command in his squadron.  They have recently been deployed to an outpost in an isolated part of Afghanistan, with very little contact with anyone outside their squadron.

I thought this would be a great opportunity for us to help make a difference in these soldiers’ lives by reaching out to them, showing them we appreciate what they do for our freedom and our country and letting them know that we care about them.  Unfortunately, the government does not provide them with some simple, basic things that are greatly needed and appreciated even though they are defending our country (such as, toothpaste, soap, baby wipes, snacks  – see names list for complete list of needs.) We are providing you with the names of the 150 soldiers, their addresses and their needs.  We hope that you will “adopt” a few of them.  Write to them, send them something. The information is included on the green colored cards found around our churches.  Take as many as you wish.   This may be an inspirational opportunity for groups of people at work; teachers to take to their classrooms; families to adopt them together, or whatever way you can make a difference.  It will be exciting to see how this spreads!

HOW TO MAIL:  Send cards and letters by regular mail.  The address must be EXACTLY as typed on the green cards.

Packages can be sent and boxes acquired by following the directions that are on the green sheets that are located around the churches.

PILLOWS FOR PATRIOTS

One of the members of our parish who works with elderly adults in personal care homes is going to have them send messages on pillows that they craft themselves to send to our adopted Army squadron.  If you would like to donate any “new and unused” white pillow cases, for this cause, please do so by bringing them to church and place them in the containers marked, “Pillows for Patriots” or you can also drop them off at the rectory or you can drop a monetary donation in the collection or mail it to the rectory to help defray the cost of buying the pillow cases.  We want to make sure all 150 soldiers get one.

RECRUITING NEW ALTAR SERVERS

We are in the process of recruiting and training new altar servers for both parishes.  Any boy or girl in the 5th grade or older, who would like to participate in the special ministry for our parish is asked to contact Fr. Dennis.  He and one of the experienced servers will do the training sometime during Lent.

2010 PARISH CONTRIBUTION RECORDS AVAILABLE

For those of you needing your church contributions for 2010 for your income tax filing, they are ready for you.  Just email the rectory at office@christthelightoftheworld.org or call the rectory.   They will be sent out Thursday of each week.
