CONFIRMATION TO BE CELEBRATED IN DUQUESNE

We received notification recently, that Bishop David Zubik will be here in Duquesne to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation for the 22 candidates of Christ the Light of the World Parish and for the 2 candidates of St. Joseph Parish.

The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 7:00 pm in the Holy Name Church.

The candidates have been preparing under the direction of Jim Roman.  Please mark your calendars so you can plan to be there that night and show you care and support for those receiving Confirmation.  Please keep them in prayer.

SEASONAL MASS SCHEDULE

We have begun our “Winter Season Mass Schedule.”  It will read as follows:  there will be no 8:30 am Mass on Sunday starting January 9 and continuing until April 17 (Palm Sunday.)  During this time the Mass on Thursday afternoon will be held in Holy Name Church.

EXTRAORDINARY REACHOUT DURING ORDINARY TIME

Recently, Debbie Walters of our parish music ministry shared with me that her son, Jeff is an Army staff sergeant, in C Company, 116th Infantry.  He is the squadron trainer, and is responsible for 150 soldiers under his command in his squadron.  They have recently been deployed to an outpost in an isolated part of Afghanistan, with very little contact with anyone outside their squadron.

I thought this would be a great opportunity for us to help make a difference in these soldiers’ lives by reaching out to them, showing them we appreciate what they do for our freedom and our country and letting them know that we care about them.  Unfortunately, the government does not provide them with some simple, basic things that are greatly needed and appreciated even though they are defending our country (such as, toothpaste, soap, baby wipes, snacks  – see names list for complete list of needs.) We are providing you with the names of the 150 soldiers, their addresses and their needs.  We hope that you will “adopt” a few of them.  Write to them, send them something. The information is included on the green colored cards found around our churches.  Take as many as you wish.   This may be an inspirational opportunity for groups of people at work; teachers to take to their classrooms; families to adopt them together, or whatever way you can make a difference.  It will be exciting to see how this spreads!

HOW TO MAIL:  Send cards and letters by regular mail.  The address must be EXACTLY as typed on the green cards.

Packages can be sent and boxes acquired by following the directions that are on the green sheets that are located around the churches.

NEW FUNERAL VESTMENTS PURCHASED

After 25 years, we have been able to purchase a new funeral set (pall and vestment.)   We would like to thank the parish Men’s Club for the $1,095.00 for the purchase of the pall (the baptismal covering for the casket.)  Anyone who might want to consider purchasing the new vestment to be worn by the priest at funerals in memory of a family member or loved one should contact Fr. Dennis.  The cost of the vestment is also $1,095.00.

RECRUITING NEW ALTAR SERVERS

We are in the process of recruiting and training new altar servers for both parishes.  Any boy or girl in the 5th grade or older, who would like to participate in the special ministry for our parish is asked to contact Fr. Dennis.  He and one of the experienced servers will do the training sometime during Lent.

2010 PARISH CONTRIBUTION RECORDS AVAILABLE

For those of you needing your church contributions for 2010 for your income tax filing, they are ready for you.  Just email the rectory at office@christthelightoftheworld.org or call the rectory.   They will be sent out Thursday of each week.

THANK YOU RECEIVED

Dear Parishioners:  On behalf of all of us at Michael’s Place, particularly the residents, I want to express a sincere thank you for your outstanding generosity to Michael’s Place this Christmas.  Your continued generosity, care and concern for us is a source of great encouragement.  With your help, Christmas was a very special time for our men this year.  We remind the residents that these gifts are a sign of the care for and belief in these men who are working to rebuild their lives and become productive members of society.  Knowing this often gives them the extra boost they need to address the difficult issues that stand in their way.  Your generosity over the years is amazing.  We can’t thank you enough.  Linda Rae Kilderry, Director
