REST IN PEACE

EXTRAORDINARY REACHOUT DURING ORDINARY TIME

Recently, Debbie Walters of our parish music ministry shared with me that her son, Jeff is an Army staff sergeant, in C Company, 116th Infantry.  He is the squadron trainer, and is responsible for 150 soldiers under his command in his squadron.  They have recently been deployed to an outpost in an isolated part of Afghanistan, with very little contact with anyone outside their squadron.

I thought this would be a great opportunity for us to help make a difference in these soldiers’ lives by reaching out to them, showing them we appreciate what they do for our freedom and our country and letting them know that we care about them.  Unfortunately, the government does not provide them with some simple, basic things that are greatly needed and appreciated even though they are defending our country (such as, toothpaste, soap, baby wipes, snacks  – see names list for complete list of needs.) We are providing you with the names of the 150 soldiers, their addresses and their needs.  We hope that you will “adopt” a few of them.  Write to them, send them something. The information is included on the green colored cards found around our churches.  Take as many as you wish.   This may be an inspirational opportunity for groups of people at work; teachers to take to their classrooms; families to adopt them together, or whatever way you can make a difference.  It will be exciting to see how this spreads!

HOW TO MAIL:  Send cards and letters by regular mail.  The address must be EXACTLY as typed on the green cards.

Packages can be sent and boxes acquired by following the directions that are on the green sheets that are located around the churches.

SEASONAL MASS SCHEDULE

We have begun our “Winter Season Mass Schedule.”  It will read as follows:  there will be no 8:30 am Mass on Sunday starting January 9 and continuing until April 17 (Palm Sunday.)  During this time the Mass on Thursday afternoon will be held in Holy Name Church.

2nd GRAGE PARENT INSTRUCTION

All parents of 2nd graders whose children will be celebrating the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist in the Spring are expected to attend the instructional meeting to be held on Sunday, January 30 at 12:30 pm in the [HN] Hall.  They are to attend 11:30 Mass with their children, proceed to the hall for a light post-Mass snack.  Then the children will be taken to the CCD Center for an educational activity, while Fr. Dennis and their teacher Nancy Lesko will instruct the parents on how they are to prepare their children for these sacraments.  Workbooks and other instructional materials, as well as first communion article catalogues will be distributed.

NEW FUNERAL VESTMENTS PURCHASED

After 25 years, we have been able to purchase a new funeral set (pall and vestment.)   We would like to thank the parish Men’s Club for the $1,095.00 for the purchase of the pall (the baptismal covering for the casket.)  Anyone who might want to consider purchasing the new vestment to be worn by the priest at funerals in memory of a family member or loved one should contact Fr. Dennis.  The cost of the vestment is also $1,095.00.

RECRUITING NEW ALTAR SERVERS

We are in the process of recruiting and training new altar servers for both parishes.  Any boy or girl in the 5th grade or older, who would like to participate in the special ministry for our parish is asked to contact Fr. Dennis.  He and one of the experienced servers will do the training sometime during Lent.

BREAST CANCER BENEFIT PLANNING MEETING

Our first planning meeting for our annual benefit will be held on Tuesday, January 25th at 6:30 pm in the [HN] hall.  We are asking anyone who would like to help to attend this meeting.  The benefit has been so successful over the past several years because we have had lots of volunteers and participation from both parishes.  Due to the demand for tickets and need for expansion, this year’s event will be held on Saturday, April 9th at the Knights of Columbus Hall, West Mifflin.  If you want to help but cannot attend this initial meeting, call or email Kathy Kuszaj (klkpgh@yahoo.com), (412-461-6189 – home), (412-600-5405 – cell.)

SUPER BOWL HOAGIE SALE

We will be having a “Super Bowl Hoagie Sale” on February 5 & 6 after all the Masses in all the churches.  We will be making them on Saturday morning. Those of you planning Super Bowl parties may want to get hoagies from us.  We will satisfy all your orders and you may want to pick them up on Saturday from 9 am – 12 pm.  To place a pre-order, just call the rectory at (412-469-0106.)
