The symbol of the desert in the bible is a place where one can be united very deeply and intimately with God. This is why Jesus was out in the desert for 40 days and this is why the Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years. Neither was lost, but were put into a place to discover themselves more fully in light of their relationship with the Father. We use the symbol of the desert for the Season of Lent for the same reason. We withdraw into the “deserts” of our hearts to deepen our relationship with God by challenging ourselves to undergo conversion (change of heart) in order to have a stronger relationship with God, Neighbor, and Self. The Season of Lent is not a “glum” time, but a time of celebration and an opportunity for us to grow more as God’s “custom design”. Have a great celebration of your first week of Lent!!!!
