Our little maple, just four feet tall two years ago, but today I saw my first bird perch briefly among her branches. So now our tree is more than a tree; she is connected, she has reached out, offered herself to a universe of needs. She’s promise, shelter, resting-place; she offers habitat. So with us, too, the family of humankind. We’re meant to offer homes to one another as confidants, helpers, work together, share life through loving each other in God.
