Lent Begins this Week - Ash Wednesday!

THE LENTEN SEASON BEGINS  - WEDNESDAY - MARCH 9, 2011: The Lenten Season is almost upon us and I would like to inform everyone to begin to prepare and ready themselves for this great season.

Regulations for Fast and Abstinence:  Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence.  Fasting means (1 full meal and 2 smaller ones).  Anyone between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast.  Anyone who has a medical condition in which fasting may be harmful in NOT obliged to fast but may do some act of kindness or charity instead.  Abstinence means (not eating meat).  This regulation begins at the age of 14.  The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.  Parents are to see to it that minors though not bound by laws of fast and abstinence are educated in the authentic sense of penance and are encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age.  All members of the faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten Season beyond what is prescribed by law. Diocese of Pittsburgh, 2011
