Monday, May 28 is Memorial Day. It is our tradition to celebrate Mass at one of our 3 cemeteries on a rotating basis. This year we are scheduled at St. Hedwig Cemetery. It is located on Grant Ave. Ext. in West Mifflin. Mass will begin at 10:00 am. If it is raining, we will have Mass in St. Hedwig Church beginning at 10:30 am. You are invited to bring a chair to sit upon if you need to.
We are in the process of recruiting altar servers to serve at our weekend Masses. Any boy or girl, 5th grade and older is invited to participate in this special ministry to serve at the altar. We will be recruiting during the summer and begin training when school starts, so that you will be ready for the Fall scheduling time frame. I hope parents encourage their children to participate. If interested, give Fr. Dennis a call.

Due to the inaccessibility of the HN hall in June & July, the Men’s Spiritual Focus Group will not meet those months. We will resume our monthly meetings August 16th.
There will be a meeting for all committee members, as well as volunteers who will work at the outing. The meeting will be held June 4, 2010, Monday evening at 6:30 pm in the Holy Name Hall. We want to identify job needs and areas that need covered. Volunteers: We can always use more help. The more the better. There are lots of things to do and a great time is had by all. If you are unable to attend the meeting but still want to help, leave your name at the rectory, so we can assign you a task.

The Christian Mothers and Guild will meet on Tuesday, May 15 beginning with the Rosary at 11:45 in Holy Name Church followed by Mass at 12 noon. The crowning of the Blessed Mother will take place by one of the members. The program will consist of a discussion on blood pressure and strokes with member, Bernice Bitkowski leading.
Plans are underway for our 8th annual golf outing. This week we are sending our invitations to businesses, golfers and friends of our parishes, as well as the golf outing raffle tickets to all of our parishioners. This way we can hopefully maximize our proceeds which benefit both of our parishes.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank anyone who in anyway helped make the recently held “Breast Cancer Awareness” Benefit such a huge success. The committee of over 20 people is grateful to the 209 people who attended as well as those who donated over 60 specialty baskets, desserts & appetizers, made cash donations or made donations in memory or in honor of someone. When all the bills are submitted, we will announce the profit from this event.
One of the keystones and hallmarks of our wonderful liturgies in the parishes in the City of Duquesne is our Music Ministry. Did you ever think this is something that God is calling you to be a part of or participate in? Did God bless you with a good voice or music ability? If so, then you should not keep it for yourself, since you enjoy singing and listening to the choir or the music in church. We are a fun and friendly group of men and women, who love embellishing our liturgies with music.
We will be hosting this workshop for anyone who has not yet completed this requirement as well as the paperwork to acquire their necessary clearances so that they may be able to volunteer and/or work in the parishes. The workshop will be held in the Holy Name Hall on Saturday, May 19 beginning at 9:00 am.
In light of the recent allegations at Penn State, I would think that everyone would be willing to protect themselves, the parish, their pastor and most especially anyone who has been victimized. Our goal is to have everyone compliant by the end of 2012.

Everyone is reminded that the Diocese has given us permission to extend this challenge to December 31, 2012. We also received permission to raise $600,000.00 instead of the $500,000.00 that I originally asked for. All donations are free of Diocese tax. This challenge is such a blessing due to the fact that these old buildings need lots of attention and repairs. Without this challenge, we would probably have had to begin to address closing or selling buildings.
We are grateful to the family of Kathryn McCawley, who died recently. They donated $200.00 in her memory to the “2 for 1 Challenge.”
This first gathering proved quite successful. Over 40 women came to participate in this exciting, new spiritual journey in hopes of gaining the insights and energy to continue to life fully alive in the Lord and for themselves and those people who are special in their life. The initial meeting of the newly formed “Women’s Spiritual Focus Group” will be held on Wednesday, April 25 beginning at 6:30 pm in the Holy Name Hall. Rowena Lynch, a married woman, who is a member of St. Mark Parish in Liberty Boro/Port Vue will be leading this group.
This group will touch on areas that personally affect women in relation to God, their families, their relationship. Spiritually healthy women makes for a better self, better mother, better wife, better friend, better parishioner. Come and give this opportunity a try. You deserve it.
We will be hosting this workshop for anyone who has not yet completed this requirement as well as the paperwork to acquire their necessary clearances so that they may be able to volunteer and/or work in the parishes. The workshop will be held in the Holy Name Hall on Saturday, May 19 beginning at 9:00 am.
In light of the recent allegations at Penn State, I would think that everyone would be willing to protect themselves, the parish, their pastor and most especially anyone who has been victimized. Our goal is to have everyone compliant by the end of 2012.

I have been informed by Fr. Fred Cain, VF, the Vicar of our vicariate #2 that he will be making his pastoral visit to both of our parishes on June 7, 2012. All staff members are expected to make themselves present and available on that day beginning at 2:00 pm. Fr. Cain will convene a meeting with all office staff, music ministers, CCD program manager, and maintenance personnel. At 4:00 pm, he will meet with the pastor. At 6:30 pm, he will meet jointly with both Pastoral Council and Finance Council members of both parishes. The meetings will take place in the Holy Name Hall.

A year and a half ago, the men of our parish embarked on an enriching journey by forming a “Men’s Spiritual Focus Group” with Fr. Dennis as moderator. Since then, some women have inquired about the possibility of having this type of group for women of our parishes. WELL THE TIME HAS COME! I wanted a spiritual, competent and experienced woman to moderate this group. God has sent her to us! Rowena Lynch, a married woman, who is a member of St. Mark Parish in Liberty Boro/Port Vue. She has extensive experience in pastoral work; served on her pastoral council; worked as pastoral associate in Holy Angels in Hays; leads a women’s prayer group; facilitated grief support groups; was a long time youth minister and serves as a Lay Dominican Associate. This is for all men, single/married, old/young or in between. If you find yourself spiritually underfed; your marital relationship is lifeless or dead; you need to reconnect in a meaningful way with God; then this day will help recharge you. We are planning a possible breakfast in the HN hall and going together on a bus. All this for a donation of $35.00. Grants are available if money is tight. The Bishops of Pennsylvania request that all Catholics dedicate the regular Lenten Friday of prayer and abstinence as well as fasting on Friday, March 30 for the preservation of religious liberty. Join the other 3 million Catholics in Pa. to pray so that the Church may be free to practice what we teach. Fasting is more than cutting back on eating. It is the practice of giving up something we are attached to (i.e. TV, texting, smoking, etc.)
